Build progress as archaeological dig at historic site of Hornsey Town Hall is complete

Hornsey Town Hall - Archaeological Dig
    12 June 2019

Archaeological digs at Hornsey Town Hall in London’s Crouch End have now been completed. The historic building is set to be transformed into an inspiring mixed-use scheme by developer Far East Consortium. The work was managed by CgMs Heritage, a specialist archaeological and built heritage consultancy, which is also the largest independent archaeology and heritage consultancy in the UK.

Angela Walsh, Sales and Marketing Director at FEC comments: “One of our key values during the redevelopment of Hornsey Town Hall is to safeguard its rich history. It has therefore been of upmost importance to us to have these archaeological digs conducted. The results will be summarised by the CgMs team and submitted to the authorities for their review. Once all material has been reviewed, we are able to commence building work for this exciting project.”

Grade II* listed, Hornsey Town Hall was built in 1935 to house Hornsey Borough Council, which used the building as its headquarters until 1966. In Spring 2018, planning was granted to revive the community spirit of Hornsey Town Hall by turning the building into a range of community spaces, creating an exceptional lifestyle opportunity for visitors, the wider community and residents. Due for completion in 2021, Hornsey Town Hall will incorporate a new arts centre, run by The Time + Space Co, which will provide first class performance arts, co-working and flexible workspaces, restaurants, cafés and a versatile event spaces.

A new hotel, operated by Dorsett Hospitality International will be situated within the original Town Hall building and a collection of 146 private and affordable homes including studios, one, two and three bedroom apartments will be spread across two new build blocks, a mews building and a carefully restored Broadway annex in the Town Hall grounds.

Make Architects has ensured that the new adjacent buildings capture the spirit and style of Hornsey Town Hall, which will be evident in the façades, where layered brickwork and carefully crafted geometric metal balustrades come together to reflect the Town Hall’s original Art Deco features and modernist aesthetic along with the distinctive concrete pattern from the Hornsey Library.
